Hace pocos dias fallece Gianni Bonnadona, quizas uno de los primeros investigadores clinicos en una epoca en la que los oncologos clinicos eramos llamados “quimioterapeutas” y la terapia medica del cancer era una incipiente especialidad. El Dr Bonadonna fue un lider visionario que, basado en la metodologia de la investigacion clinica en cancer, desarrollo la quimioterapia adyuvante como un modelo de estudio y de aplicacion de nuevos conceptos que fueron una bisagra en el concepto del tratamiento medico del cancer de mama y que luego se expandio a otros modelos tumorales.

“el Gianni”, como era llamado afectuosamente por sus amigos en la Argentina, visito varias veces nuestro país, con el cual siempre mantuvo un cálida y amistosa relación.

Gianni Bonadonna, MD, era considerado el “Padre de la Oncología Italiana,” pero sus contribuciones científicas al campo y su generoso espíritu colegiado se extendían más allá de las costas de su tierra natal. El Dr. Bonadonna estaba a la vanguardia en la batalla para convencer al establishment quirúrgico que la terapia adyuvante podría mejorar significativamente los resultados clínicos. El era él científico de los científicos. También era un doctor de pacientes, teniendo este mensaje para la generación más joven de oncólogos: “No queden demasiado atrapados en la avalancha de datos y estadísticas. Es tiempo de reconectar con el paciente.” El Dr. Bonadonna falleció el 7 de Septiembre de 2015. Tenía 81 años.

BIOGRAFÍA NARRATIVA de
Gianni Bonadonna, M.D.

El Dr. Gianni Bonadonna, nacido en Milan en 1934, obtuvo su título de médico en la Universidad de Milan en 1959. Durante su entrenamiento post doctoral, asistió como Becario de Investigación en las Divisiones de Quimioterapia Clínica (1961-63) y de Investigación Clínica (1963-64) del Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center en New York. Luego se unió al Istituto Nazionale Tumori de Milan donde se convirtió en Director de la División de Oncología Médica en 1976. En 1991 fue nombrado Jefe de Departamento de Medicina del Cáncer en la misma institución y Profesor Asociado en el Escuela de Hematología de la Universidad de Milano. Desde 2008, Director Emérito en la misma institución.
En 1999 fundó la Fundación Michelangelo, una organización sin fines de lucro para Investigación y Tratamiento del Cáncer cuyos objetivos principales son de conducir estudios clínicos e traslacionales internacionalmente y de mejorar la colaboración en muchas disciplinas médicas.
La principal actividad de investigación del Dr. Bonadonna incluía los estudios iniciales sobre la eficacia clínica del Adriamycin (doxorubicin), epirubicin y bleomycin, un número de ensayos trascendentales de quimiterapia adyuvante y primaria para cancer de mama de alto riesgo como también en la modalidad combinada para el tratamiento de la enfermedad de Hodgkin.
En 1972 diseñó una nueva combinación de quimioterapia para la enfermedad de Hodgkin conocida como ABVD (Adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine y dacarbazine) que demostró ser superior a la clásica quimioterapia MOPP y efectiva en pacientes resistentes a MOPP. ABVD es hoy en día (40 años más tarde) aún considerada el estándar dorado para la quimioterapia convencional en la enfermedad de Hodgkin. En reconocimiento a sus investigaciones en la enfermedad de Hodgkin, el Comité del Simposio Internacional en Enfermedad de Hodgkin en Cologne (Alemania) instituyó oficialmente la ‘Beca y Conferencia de Enfermedad de Hodgkin Gianni Bonadonna’.
En 1973 diseñó y condujo el primer estudio aleatorio para probar la actividad de la combinación de quimioterapia CMF (cyclophosphamide, methotrexate y fluorouracil) como un tratamiento adyuvante en cáncer de mama operable de ganglios positivos.  El CMF adyuvante resultó ser efectivo en reducir significativamente el riesgo de recurrencia de la enfermedad y muerte luego de período de tiempo prolongado (30 años). Entonces diseñó y condujo un número de ensayos trascendentales en ambas quimioterapias, adyuvante y primaria, para cáncer de mama de alto riesgo. La administración de quimioterapia primaria logró un rápido achicamiento del tumor y pudo inducir remisión completa patológica en una fracción de pacientes, favorablemente influenciando sus prognosis. Como un tributo a sus contribuciones en el área de la investigación del cáncer, la American Society of Clinical Oncology instituyó en 2007 la ‘Beca y Conferencia de Enfermedad de Hodgkin Gianni Bonadonna’ la cual será presentada anualmente a un investigador de mérito en el área de cáncer de mama.
Profesor Visitante en varias Universidades a nive mundial, recibió numerosos premios prestigiosos éntrelos cuales el Rosenthal (1982), Karnofsky (1989), Medalla de Honor de la American Cancer Society (1991), Josef Steiner (1992), San Salvatore (1993), Ambrogino d'oro- Premio de la Municipality of Milano (1993), Federación de European Cancer Society Clinical Research Award (1995), en  1999 el "Premio al Servicio Distinguido por Logro Científico" de la American Society of Clinical Oncology, el ‘Saul Rosenberg’  por ensayos en linfoma malign en 2001, el ‘1st  St. Gallen Golden Cancer Award’ y el ‘II Premio Internacional de Oncología Duque de Badajoz della  Fundacion para la Investigación y Formación en Oncología’  en 2003. Desde 1997 él es Fellow del Royal College of Physicians, Londres, Inglaterra. En 2004 recibió el ‘Laurea onoris Causa’ en Medicin, University of Turin, Italia.
El Dr. Gianni Bonadonna es autor o co-autor de más de 550 publicaciones científicas que aparecieron en la literatura médica internacional, y co-editor de un Libro de Texto Italiano en Oncología Médico cuya 8va. edición apareció en Junio 2007. También es autor de cuatro libros sobre medicina para gente lega y de un libro sobre la Revolución Seppy en India.
Es también autor de algunos libros para gente lega y en el publicado en 2005 titulado “Coraje recomencemos (Let’s take heart again)” narró su experiencia en vida familiar, social y laboral luego de una grave hemorragia cerebral y alentando a todos los pacientes y familiares a nunca darse por vencidos. Fue chairman de multiples comités institucionales y nacionales dirigidos a mejorar la relación paciente-doctor. El último libro publicado en 2014 titulado ‘Appuntamento col Padreterno’ (Cita con el Padre Eterno) donde lo terminó ‘como el Papa Ratzinger, quiero vivir como ’simple peregrino en la última etapa de mi peregrinación’.

A few days ago Gianni Bonnadona died, maybe one of the first clinical researchers in a time in which we clinical oncologists were called “chemotherapists” and the medical therapy for cancer was a new-born specialty.  Dr. Bonadonna was a visionary leader who, based on the methodology of clinical research in cancer, developed adjuvant chemotherapy as a study model and of the use of new concepts that were a hinge in the concept of the medical treatment for breast cancer and which later expanded to other tumoral models.

Gianni Bonadonna, MD, was considered the “Father of Italian Oncology,” but his scientific contributions to the field and his generous collegial spirit extended far beyond the shores of his native land. Dr. Bonadonna was at the forefront in the battle to convince the surgical establishment that adjuvant therapy could significantly improve clinical outcomes. He was a scientist’s scientist. He was also a patient’s doctor, having this message for the younger generation of oncologists: “Don’t get too caught up in the deluge of data and statistics. It is time to reconnect with the patient.” Dr. Bonadonna died on September 7, 2015. He was 81.

NARRATIVE BIOGRAPHY of
Gianni Bonadonna, M.D.

Dr. Gianni Bonadonna, born in Milan in 1934, achieved his medical degree at the University of Milan in 1959. During his postdoctoral training, he attended as Research Fellow the Divisions of Clinical Chemotherapy (1961-63) and of Clinical Investigation (1963-64) of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He then joined the Istituto Nazionale Tumori of Milan where he became Director of the Division of Medical Oncology in 1976. In 1991 he was appointed Head of the Department of Cancer Medicine in the same institution and Associate Professor at the School of Hematology of the University in Milano. Since 2008, Emeritus Director at the same Institution.
In 1999 he founded the Michelangelo Foundation, a non-profit organization for Cancer Research and Treatment whose main aims are to conduct clinical and translational studies internationally and to improve collaboration in many medical disciplines.
Dr. Bonadonna's main research activity included the initial studies on the clinical efficacy of Adriamycin (doxorubicin), epirubicin and bleomycin, a number of seminal trials on adjuvant and primary chemotherapy for high-risk breast cancer as well as on combined modality for the treatment of Hodgkin's disease.
In 1972 he designed new combination chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s disease known as ABVD (Adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine and dacarbazine) that proved to be superior to the classical MOPP chemotherapy and effective in MOPP-resistant patients. ABVD is nowadays (40 years later) still considered the golden standard for conventional chemotherapy in Hodgkin’s disease. In recognition of his researches in Hodgkin ’s disease, the Committee of the International Symposium on Hodgkin’s disease in Cologne (Germany) officially instituted the ‘Gianni Bonadonna Hodgkin’s Disease Award and Lecture’.
In 1973 he designed and conducted the first randomized study to test the activity of the CMF (cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and fluorouracil) combination chemotherapy as an adjuvant treatment in node-positive operable breast cancer. Adjuvant CMF proved to be effective in significantly reducing the risk of disease recurrence and death over a prolonged period of time (30 years). He then designed and conducted a number of seminal trials on both adjuvant and primary chemotherapy for high risk breast cancer. The administration of primary chemotherapy achieved prompt tumor shrinkage and was able to induce pathological complete remission in a fraction of patients, favorably influencing their prognosis. As a tribute to his contributions in the field of cancer research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology instituted in 2007 the ‘Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award and Lecture’ that will be presented annually to a researcher of merit in the field of breast cancer.
Visiting Professor in several Universities all over the world, he received numerous prestigious awards among which the Rosenthal (1982), Karnofsky (1989), Medal of Honor from the American Cancer Society (1991), Josef Steiner (1992), San Salvatore (1993), Ambrogino d'oro- Prize of the Municipality of Milano (1993), Federation of European Cancer Society Clinical Research Award (1995), in  1999 the "Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement" dell'American Society of Clinical Oncology, the ‘Saul Rosenberg’  for trials on malignant lymphoma in 2001, the ‘1st  St. Gallen Golden Cancer Award’ and the ‘II Premio Internacional de Oncología Duque de Badajoz della  Fundacion para la Investigación y Formación en Oncología’  in 2003. Since 1997 he is Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London, England. In 2004 he received the ‘Laurea Honoris Causa’ in Medicin, University of Turin, Italy.
Dr. Gianni Bonadonna is author or co-authors of more than 550 scientific publications which appeared in the international medical literature, and co-editor of an Italian Textbook on Medical Oncology whose 8th edition appeared in June 2007. He is also author of four books on medicine for lay people and of one book on the Sepoy Revolution in India.
He is also author of some books for lay people and in the one published in 2005 titled “Coraggio ricominciamo (Let’s take heart again)” he narrated his experience in family, social and working life after a severe cerebral hemorrhage and encourage all patients and relatives to never give up. He was chairman of multiple institutional and national committees aimed at improving the patient-doctor relationship. The last book published in 20014 is titled ‘Appuntamento col Padreterno’ (Appointment with the God Almighty) where he ended ‘like Pope Ratzinger, I want to live as ’simple pilgrim in the last stage of my pilgrimage’.

Over the past three decades, emergence and rapid development of nanotechnology have brought new hopes for cancer therapy. Nowadays, nanotechnology is developing rapidly. The application of nanotechnology promotes progression of molecular probe detection, targeted cancer therapy, radiotherapy with special nanoparticles, and drug delivery researches.

In order to display the latest progress on nanomedicine in oncology, Cancer Biology & Medicine published the special issue on cancer nanomedicine to benefit our readers worldwide. The contents involve DNA and protein detection in cancer cells, texosome-based drug delivery system, and cancer imaging using nanoparticles.

Cada año, el consumo de alimentos no saludables contribuye a la muerte de más de 11.3 millones de personas, de acuerdo con una estimación preparada por el Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation utilizando datos del Estudio de la carga global de Enfermedad 2010 publicado en The Lancet en 2012.

América Latina presenta uno de los mayores índices de sobrepeso y obesidad en el mundo. La causa principal de este problema, convertido en una epidemia que afecta ya a más del 50% de los adultos en la región, se debe al alto consumo de bebidas y alimentos ultraprocesados con altos contenidos de azúcares, grasas y sal, y al abandono de las dietas tradicionales.

Este es un video producido en Brasil y lo distribuyeron a CLAS, la Coalicion LatinoAmerica Saludable, de la cual SLACOM es miembro. Es una herramienta para controlar las enfermedades crónicas mejorando la dieta y disminuyendo la obesidad, ingesta de sal y azucares y alimentos procesados.
Esto en muy importante a fin de mejorar la prevención  en enfermedades cardiovasculares, diabetes y cáncer, entre otras enfermedades crónicas.

“La Guía Alimentaria para la Población Brasileña”, del Ministerio de Salud de Brasil. Comer alimentos frescos, preparar la propia comida y comer junto a amigos son algunas de las diez nuevas reglas para una alimentación sana. La guía ha sido considerada la mejor del mundo en el área de educación alimentaria por “Vox”, la principal página web de noticias de Estados Unidos. Declaration of Consumers International – Office for Latinamerica and the Caribbean

Each year the consumption of unhealthy food contribute to the death of more than 11.3 million persons, in accordance with an estimation prepared by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation using data from the Study of global burden of Illness 2010 published in The Lancet in 2012.

Latin America presents one of the highest overweight and obesity index in the world.  The main cause is this problem, converted in an epidemic that already affects more than 50% of the region’s adults, it is due to the high consumption of beverages and ultra processed food with high contents of sugars, fats and salt, and the abandonment of traditional diets.

This is a video produced in Brazil and distributed to CLAS, the Coalicion LatinoAmerica Saludable, of which SLACOM is member. It’s a tool to control the chronic diseases improving the diet and reducing obesity, salt and sugars intake and processed food.
This is very important in order to improve the prevention of heart diseases, diabetes and cancer, among other chronic diseases.

Hoy, Junio 12, el World Bank y WHO están publicando por primera vez el informe global de progreso en cobertura médica universal. Hoy también señala el comienzo del conteo regresivo de 6 meses al Día Cobertura Médica Universal 2015 – y más de 600 organizaciones ya se han inscripto.

El nuevo reporte de progreso destaca el ímpetu global para la cobertura médica universal como así también breachas inaceptables. Se los invita a concurrir a la 6ta conferencia “Actual Estado y Futuro de Terapias Dirigidas Anti-Cáncer” que se realizará en Buenos Aires, Argentina.

6th Interamerican Oncology Conference

You are being invited to attend the 6th conference “Current Status and Future of Anti-Cancer Targeted Therapies” that will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
An outstanding faculty of speakers from the United States and Europe has committed to participate in this meeting. The conference agenda will focus on new translational advances in the treatment of cancer as well as provide updates of conventional therapies for a number of the most common tumor types.

The meeting objectives are designed to introduce the audience to the latest information on targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and emerging treatments in early development. The major emphasis will be on clinical aspects of cancer treatment in the 21st century with discussion of significant scientific advances underlying the novel approaches still in preclinical development.  
This meeting is the primary opportunity for practicing oncologists, hematologists, basic and clinical, translational investigators, scientists  and cancer related health care workers oncologists and health workers to participate in a conference focusing on novel targeted therapies and other treatment advances which are changing the face of cancer care.

CURSO INTERNACIONAL "GESTIÓN DE EXCELENCIA EN CANCER"
Octubre 14-16, 2015 – Bogotá, Colombia

Alumni Sils, Asociación de Exalumnos de Harvard y ACEMI, Asociación Colombiana de Empresas de Medicina Integral, asociados con una serie de entidades participantes en la atención del cáncer en América Latina y en Colombia; están organizando el CURSO INTERNACIONAL "GESTIÓN DE EXCELENCIA EN CANCER", el cual tendrá énfasis en analizar la ruta crítica de la atención del cáncer desde antes de su aparición clínica, en sus primeros estadios, durante su evolución y en el estado terminal de la enfermedad.

Como profesores invitados tenemos un selecto grupo de expertos de la Universidad de Harvard, del Centro MD Anderson, de India, Argentina, España, Brasil, Perú, Colombia y otros países y contaremos con la participación de más de 250 líderes clínicos, administrativos de instituciones especializadas en oncología y aseguradores, funcionarios de gobierno, representantes de pacientes, industria farmacéutica y académicos de diferentes países de la región.

El curso tendrá una duración de tres días (Octubre 14,15 y 16) y se llevará a cabo en Bogotá, Colombia en las instalaciones del CENTRO EMPRESARIAL El CUBO en Bogotá, y será coordinado por ACEMI y la Universidad Central.

Alumni Sils, Asociación de Exalumnos de Harvard and ACEMI (Colombian Association of Integral Medicine Businesses), associated with a series of participating entities in cancer care in Latin America and in Colombia; are organizing the INTERNATIONAL COURSE “EXCELLENCE IN CANCER MANAGEMENT", which will emphasize in analizing the critical path of cancer care prior to its clinical onset, in its first phases, during its evolution and in the terminal phase of the disease.

As invited faculty we have a select Group of experts from Harvard University, MD Anderson Center, from India, Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and other countries and will have the participation of more tan 250 clinical leaders, clerks from specialized institutions in oncology and insurers, government officers, patients’ representatives, pharmaceutical industry and academics of different countries of the region.

VIII Congreso Latinoamericano de Cuidados Paliativos
Abril 14-16, 2016 – Ciudad de Mexico 

La Asociación Latinoamericana de Cuidados Paliativos (ALCP) con el apoyo de la International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC), la Fundación Mexicana para la Salud AC (FUNSALUD) y la Asociación Civil Tómatelo a Pecho, realizará este evento  con el lema de nuestro congreso es: “Cuidados Paliativos: Innovación y desarrollo para la atención integral en salud” y esta es una oportunidad única para favorecer el desarrollo de los Cuidados Paliativos en México, Centro América y el Caribe a través de la adopción de políticas públicas, educación y provisión de servicios a personas con necesidades paliativas.
Los congresos de la ALCP tienen como objetivo favorecer el desarrollo de los CP en la región, conocer los trabajos en proceso y logros de los equipos de CP, acceder a nuevas tendencias de vanguardia en medicamentos para el control de síntomas y el intercambio de experiencias entre los asistentes.
Becas para participantes: La IAHPC otorgará 15 becas a personas que tengan pósteres y sesiones simultáneas aceptadas en el Congreso. En pocos días la IAHPC enviará un anuncio con instrucciones para aplicar.

VIII Latin-American Congress on Palliative Care
April 14-16, 2016 – City of Mexico 

The Latin-American Association on Palliative Care (ALCP) with the support of the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC), the Fundación Mexicana para la Salud AC (FUNSALUD) and the Asociación Civil Tómatelo a Pecho, will carry out this event  with the motto of our Congress which is: “Palliative Care: Innovation and development for the integral health care” and this is a unique opportunity to favor the development of Palliative Care in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean through the adoption of public policies, education and provision of services to people with palliative needs.
The ALCP congresses have as their objective to favor the development of the PC in the región, know the ongoing processes and achievements of the PC teams, access the new avant-gard trends in drugs for the control of symptoms and the exchange of experiences between attendees.
Grants for participants: The IAHPC will award 15 grants to persons that hve posters and simultaneous sessions accepted in the Congress.  In few days the IAHPC will send an announcement with instructions to apply.

19° SIS Congreso Mundial en Salud Mamaria

El SIS (Senologic International Society) y la PTBnRP (Polish Society for Breast Cancer Research) los invita a Uds. al 19° SIS Congreso Mundial en Salud Mamaria en paralelo con la Conferencia Nacional Polaca en Diagnóstico y Tratamiento de Cáncer de Mama FALENTY.
Similar a sus anfitriones en Orlando, ellos quieren mostrar dinamismo e innovación de cáncer de mama clínico y diagnóstico. Varsovia como una ciudad creciendo vigorosamente es perfectamente adecuada para la tarea.

19th SIS World Congress on Breast Healthcare
May 5-8, 2016 – Warsaw, Poland

The SIS (Senologic International Society) and PTBnRP (Polish Society for Breast Cancer Research invite you to the 19th SIS World Congress on Breast Healthcare in parallel with the Polish National Conference on Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer FALENTY.
Similar to their hosts in Orlando, they want to show dynamism and innovation of clinical and diagnostic breast health. Warsaw as a vigorously growing city is perfectly suited for the task.
The congress will be a great opportunity to meet scientists, experts and supporters of the promotion and development of medicine. The guests would be invited to numerous lectures, meetings, panel sessions, poster presentations and workshops.
