The Distinguished Achievement Award, presented to Dr. Cazap at the President’s Dinner on June 1st, recognizes individuals whose scientific accomplishments and mentorship have benefited ASCO and the broader oncology community.
The FASCO distinction recognizes ASCO members for their extraordinary volunteer service, dedication, and commitment to ASCO. Their efforts benefit ASCO, the specialty of oncology, and, most importantly, the patients for whom they serve.
Estudio sobre Prevalencia de Cáncer de Mama en Mujeres Jóvenes en Latinoamérica
El Dr. Mohar y la Dra. Cynthia Villarreal del Instituto Nacional de Cancerología en México, junto con el Dr. Cazap, están trabajando en una línea de investigación sobre Cáncer de Mama en Mujeres Jóvenes, ya que según la experiencia de nuestros Institutos estamos recibiendo un número creciente de casos con estas características. Al parecer este fenómeno es particularmente frecuente en países en vías de desarrollo, y tiene un comportamiento distinto al de los países desarrollados.
Por lo cual, estamos realizando un manuscrito sobre la prevalencia y mortalidad de Cáncer de Mama en Mujeres Jóvenes en Latinoamérica, para contrastarlo con las cifras en países desarrollados.
Estamos publicando esta noticia para solicitarles su colaboración para conocer si en sus Institutos se cuenta con el registro de prevalencia y mortalidad de pacientes con Cáncer de Mama por edades, y si pueden compartir con nosotros esta información. Además de ayudarnos a conocer si existe alguna información ya publicada o por publicarse en sus países sobre este tema.
Contamos con tiempo limitado para recolectar esta información. Por lo que mucho les agradeceremos si pudieran proporcionárnosla a la brevedad posible.

IARC: Becas para Investigación del Cáncer
La próxima llamada para inscripción para Becas IARC estará abierta desde el 1º de Octubre de 2013, con una fecha límite el 30 Noviembre 2013
Desde 1966, IARC ha otorgado más de 500 becas a científicos junior para entrenamiento en investigación del cancer. Aproximadamente 85% de los Becados regresan a su país de origen al completar su entrenamiento, y alrededor del 82% permanecen activos en investigación del cáncer. Como resultado, las Becas IARC han hecho una contribución importante al desarrollo de la investigación del cáncer en muchos países.
El Programa de Becas ofrece becas postdoctorales a científicos junior de cualquier país que intent perseguir una carrera en investigación del cáncer y desea completar su entrenamiento en el IARC en Lyon, Francia trabajando en un Grupo de investigación. Las solicitudes de candidatos de países de bajo y mediano ingreso o postulantes de cualquier parte del mundo pero con proyectos relacionados con países de bajo y mediano ingreso son alentados.
Un Senior Visiting Scientist Award se ofrece también para un investigador senior calificado y experimentado que desee pasar de seis a doce meses en el IARC trabajando en un proyecto colaborativo en un área de investigación relacionado con los programas de la Agencia.
IARC ofrece también un Expertise Transfer Fellowship para permitir a un investigador establecido pasar de seis a doce meses en un instituto huésped apropiado en un país de bajo y mediano ingreso a fin de transferir conocimiento y experiencia en un área de investigación pertinente para el país huésped y relacionaldo con los programas de la Agencia.

IARC Fellowships for Cancer Research
The next call for applications for IARC Fellowships will be open as from 1st October 2013, with a deadline of 30 November 2013
Since 1966, IARC has awarded more than 500 fellowships to junior scientists for research training in cancer. Approximately 85% of Fellows return to their home country on completion of their training, and around 82% remain active in cancer research. As a result, IARC Fellowships have made a substantial contribution to the development of cancer research in many countries.
The Fellowship Programme offers postdoctoral fellowships to junior scientists from any country who intend to pursue a career in cancer research and wish to complete their training at the IARC in Lyon, France working in a research Group. Applications from candidates from low- and medium-resource countries or applicants from any part of the world but with projects related to low- and medium-resource countries are encouraged.
A Senior Visiting Scientist Award is also offered for a qualified and experienced senior investigator who wishes to spend from six to twelve months at the IARC working on a collaborative project in a research area related to the Agency’s programmes.
IARC is also offering an Expertise Transfer Fellowship to enable an established investigator to spend from six to twelve months in an appropriate host institute in a low- / medium-resource country in order to transfer knowledge and expertise in a research area relevant for the host country and related to the Agency’s programmes.

La Patología Mamaria y en especial el cáncer de mama, supone una problemática que en términos generales, necesita de una significativa atención médica multidisciplinar con múltiples variables, tanto en recursos humanos como materiales.
Diariamente miles de profesionales sanitarios en nuestro país, ya sean básicos o asistenciales, y en diferentes niveles, dedican su trabajo a que la salud mamaria sea preservada de forma global.

Partiendo de los logros de los ICCC 1, 2, 3 y 4 el 5º Congreso Internacional de Control del Cáncer continuará despertando conciencia sobre el control del cáncer/ENT, promoviendo transferencia de conocimiento, apoyando la construcción de capacidades, mejorando la participación y promoviendo la colaboración entre organizaciones, instituciones, la política, la práctica y la sociedad civil para aumentar el control global del cáncer and enfermedades no transmisibles. Los temas del Congreso incluyen enfoques intersectoriales al control de factores de riesgo para cáncer y ENTs, integración y coordinación del sistema de salud, alineamiento de la salud poblacional y práctica médica y ciencia para servir, la práctica y la política (transferencia de conocimientos).
El propósito del Congreso es discutir ‘qué sería necesario para convertir nuestro actual conocimiento del control del cáncer en instrucciones y acciones que mejorarán los resultados del cáncer y ENT de la población?’ El actual estado de conocimiento será mencionado en los materiales de pre-lectura del Congreso y a través de presentaciones plenarias. Sin embargo, el Congreso no trata sobre discutir el presente contenido de conocimiento, sino sobre aplicar ‘lo que sabemos sobre lo que hacemos’.

5th International Cancer Control Congress (ICCC5)
November 3-6, 2013 – Westin Lima Hotel & Convention Center - Lima, Peru
The Congress will start with an Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception on Sunday, November 3, 2013, followed by two and a half Congress days with Plenary Sessions and concurrent Workshops.
The official language of the Congress is English. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be provided for all Plenary Sessions.
Building on the achievements of the ICCC 1, 2, 3 and 4 the 5th International Cancer Control Congress will continue to raise cancer/NCD control awareness, promote knowledge transfer, support capacity building, improve participation and promote collaboration between organizations, institutions, policy, practice and civil society to enhance global control of cancer and non-communicable diseases. The themes of the Congress include cross-sectoral approaches to the control of risk factors for cancer and NCD’s, health system integration and coordination, alignment of population-health and medical practice and science to service, practice and policy (knowledge transfer).
The purpose of the Congress is to discuss ‘what would be necessary to convert our current knowledge of cancer control into directions and actions that will enhance population cancer and NCD outcomes?’ The current state of knowledge will be referenced in Congress pre-reading materials and through plenary presentation(s). However, the Congress is not about discussing current knowledge content, but rather about applying ‘what we know to what we do’.

10º Workshop Latinoamericano de Educación Médica en Terapia Molecular Enfocada del Cáncer (MTTC)
Noviembre 22-23, 2013 – Sao Paulo, Brasil
El objetivo de los Workshops es proveer educación médica continua de alta calidad para oncólogos. Un grupo distinguido de expertos oncólogos Latinoamericanos de diferentes disciplinas estarán haciendo presentaciones sobre el modo básico de acción y aplicación clínica de una serie de terapias enfocadas. El Workshop también resumirá los últimos desarrollos en los campos de of transducción de señales, angiogénesis, y terapia basada en anticuerpos en terapia del cáncer.

10th Latin American Medical Education Workshop on Molecular Targeted Therapy of Cancer (MTTC)
November 22-23, 2013 – Sao Paulo, Brazil
The aim of the Workshops is to provide high quality continuing medical education for oncologists. A distinguished group of Latin American oncology experts from different disciplines will be giving presentations on the basic mode of action and clinical application of a range of targeted therapies. The Workshop will also summarise the latest developments in the fields of signal transduction, angiogenesis, and antibody-based therapy in cancer therapy.

La Escuela Europea de Oncología en cooperación con Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology yCritical Reviews in Oncology Hematology está realizandouna serie de programas de aprendizaje a distancia con Internet,llamadsa 'e-sessions': e-grandrounds e e-oncoreviews.
e-grandrounds: son sesiones semanales en tópicos calientes organizados sin sponsors comerciales y están acreditados por CME y ESMO-MORA.
e-oncoreviews: son sesiones mensuales diseñadas para ofrecer un balance y análisis exhaustivo sobre un tópico específico, sea un tipo de tumor, un tipo de terapia, diagnóstico o enfoque terapéutico. Algunos e-oncoreviews son organizados en colaboración con los sponsors de la Escuela, mientras que las sesiones organizadas por ESO se realizan en cooperación con Nature Reviews in Clinical Oncology y Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology y acreditados por CME y ESMO-MORA.
Los participantes están invitados a asistir a las sesiones en vivo:
- e-grandrounds: cada Jueves a la misma hora (18:15-19:00 CET)
- e-oncoreviews: el primer Jueves del mes a la misma hora (18:15-19:00 CET )
- o la Sesión Grabada que está disponibles 24 horas luego de la sesión en vivo.
En ambos modos, los participantes participan en forma remota, sin webcam y sin aparecer en el sistema.
Las preguntas pueden enviarse anticipadamente al Comentarista que las discutirá con el Experto y considerará cubrirlas durante la presentación en vivo. Durante la sesión en vivo, los participantes tienen la oportunidad de presentar preguntas por escrito y comentarios que son recibidas por el Comentaristas que se las pasa al Experto. Las preguntas presentadas durante la sesión en vivo son contestadas durante la sesión directamente!

The European School of Oncology in co-operation with Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology and Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology is holding a series of distance learning programmes on the Internet, called 'e-sessions': e-grandrounds and e-oncoreviews.
e-grandrounds: are weekly sessions on hot-topics organised without commercial sponsorship and are CME and ESMO-MORA accredited.
e-oncoreviews: are monthly sessions designed to offer a balance and comprehensive overview on a specific topic, be it a tumour type, a type of therapy, diagnostic or therapeutic approach. Some e-oncoreviews are organised in collaboration with the School's sponsors, whilst ESO-organised sessions are held in co-operation with Nature Reviews in Clinical Oncology and Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology and CME and ESMO-MORA accredited.
Participants are invited to attend the sessions live:
- e-grandrounds: every Thursday at the same time (18:15-19:00 CET)
- e-oncoreviews: the first Tuesday of the month at the same time (18:15-19:00 CET)
- or the Recorded Session that is available 24 hours after the session live.
In both modes, attendants participate in remote, without webcam and without appearing in the system.
Questions can be sent in advance to the Discussant who will discuss them with the Expert and consider to cover them during the live presentation. During the live session, participants have the opportunity to submit text questions and comments that are received by the Discussant who puts them to the Expert. Questions submitted during the live session are answered to during the session directly!

En ERI, una organización sin fines de lucro, apoyan la investigación, educación y tutoría que ayudará avanzar en la comprensión y conocimiento de determinantes étnicos del cáncer.
Muchos países étnicamente diversas en Asia, Latinoamérica, Medio Oriente y Norte de Africa carecen de servicios adecuados para el cáncer para screening y tratamiento y así experimentar altas tasas de mortalidad comparado a otros países con más avanzados diagnóstico y tratamiento del cáncer. Adicionalmente, los enfoques de diagnóstico y tratamiento varían mucho debido a diferencias en normas culturales, sistemas de salud, y condiciones socio-económicas. En este medio ambiente, un solo enfoque al control y prevención del cáncer en todos los países será ineficaz. Por lo tanto, la identificación del impacto de la etnicidad en el riesgo del cáncer y sus etiologías es esencial.
En ERI el objetivo está dirigido a financiar investigación en áreas tales como patogénesis molecular, genética, epigenética como también como determinaciones de factor de riesgo para reducir la incidencia y mortalidad del cáncer en estas poblaciones étnicas. ERI apoya tutorías para promover la excelencia en investigadores científicos que promoverán el conocimiento y entendimiento de los determinantes étnicos del cáncer. Many ethnically diverse countries in Asia, Latin America, Middle East and North Africa lack adequate cancer services for screening and treatment and thus experience higher mortality rates compared to other countries with more advanced cancer diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, approaches to diagnosis and treatment vary greatly due to differences in cultural norms, health care systems, and socio-economic conditions. In this environment, a single approach to cancer control and prevention in all countries will be ineffective. Therefore, identification of the impact of ethnicity on cancer risk and cancer etiologies is essential.
At ERI aim is directed to fund research in areas such as molecular pathogenesis, genetics, epigenetics as well as risk factor determinations to reduce cancer incidence and mortality in these ethnic populations. ERI supports mentorships to promote excellence in scientific investigators who will advance knowledge and understanding of the ethnic determinants of cancer. ERI also further the understanding and knowledge of the medical establishment and policy makers in these communities about the impact of ethnicity on cancer.
