The Distinguished Achievement Award, presented to Dr. Cazap at the President’s Dinner on June 1st, recognizes individuals whose scientific accomplishments and mentorship have benefited ASCO and the broader oncology community.
The FASCO distinction recognizes ASCO members for their extraordinary volunteer service, dedication, and commitment to ASCO. Their efforts benefit ASCO, the specialty of oncology, and, most importantly, the patients for whom they serve.
Día Mundial Sin Tabaco – Mayo 31
Nos encanta poder compartir con Ud. las noticias que el 31 de Mayo (Día Mundial Sin Tabaco), UICC y Bupa lanzarán una nueva sociedad llamada 'Asociándonos para prevenir el cáncer: trabajando juntos para reducir el uso global del tabaco'.
El evento inaugural tundra lugar en un desayuno en Geneva, que tendrá la asistencia de representantes de FCTC Secretariat, WHO y Gobiernos.
Se emitirá un documento en ese día. La esencia de la sociedad, conjuntamente desarrollada por UICC/McCabe y Bupa, es descripta parcialmente como sigue:
Con el apoyo fundador de Bupa y activa participación, la nueva asocación unirá las redes globales de UICC y la experiencia de salud de Bupa para apoyar países en implementar el WHO FCTC. La asociación atraerá a McCabe Centre experiencia legal internacionalmente reconocida y a Cancer Council Victoria experiencia de amplia base en control del cáncer, y enfocará actividades en países donde hay una fuerte capacidad para mejorar los existentes sistemas legales y de política sobre el tabaco y apuntará leyes y políticas clave reconocidas en reducir el uso del tabaco.

World No Tobacco Day – May 31
We are delighted to be able to share with you the news that on 31 May (World No Tobacco Day), UICC and Bupa will be launching a new partnership called 'Partnering to prevent cancer: working together to reduce global tobacco use'.
The launch event will take place at a breakfast event in Geneva, which will be attended by representatives of the FCTC Secretariat, WHO and Gobernments.
A document will be released on the day. The essence of the partnership, jointly developed by UICC/McCabe and Bupa, is partly described as follows:
With Bupa's founding support and active involvement, this new partnership will bring together UICC's global networks and Bupa's health expertise to support countries in implementing the WHO FCTC. The partnership will draw upon the McCabe Centre's internationally recognised legal expertise and Cancer Council Victoria's broad-based expertise in cancer control, and will focus activities in countries where there is strong capacity to improve existing legal and policy systems around tobacco and will target key laws and policies which are known to reduce tobacco use.

Nuevo Financiamiento ASCO/CCF para LMCs
El 2 de Mayo ASCO y su afiliada filantrópica, la Conquer Cancer Foundation, public aron en sus websites información sobre el apoyo de la Fundación a las nuevas becas a la investigación e innovación en países de bajos y medianos recursos. La información puede encontrarse en www.conquercancerfoundation.org/innovation.
Las Becas Innovativas Internacionales son diseñadas para estimular enfoques novedosos “caseros” para el control del cáncer en países de bajos y medianos recurso. Cada beca provee hasta $20,000 que se otorga a una organización sin fines de lucro o agencia gubernamental en un país de bajo o mediano recurso, y requiere que el Investigador Principal sea un miembro de ASCO, sea afiliado con la Organización Becada, y sea residente de un LMC (País Bajo Mediano). Muchos más detalles e instrucciones de la solicitud están provistos en el documento Request for Proposal (RFP) publicado en la webpage del vínculo mencionado arriba.
La solicitud seguirá un proceso de dos etapas, comenzando con una Carta de Intención que puede ser presentada entre Julio 1 y Agosto 1. Aspirantes potenciales pueden comenzar ahora analizando el RFP y comenzando a desarrollar los componentes de la solicitud.
Nuestra esperanza es que este mecanismo de financiamiento ayude a que ideas frescas se tornen realidad y, a través de los canales de comunicación y educación de ASCO, sean difundidas a otros ambientes LMC.
New ASCO/CCF Funding for LMCs
On May 2 ASCO and its philanthropic affiliate, the Conquer Cancer Foundation, posted on their websites information about the Foundation’s new grant supporting research and innovation in low- and middle-income countries. Information can be found at www.conquercancerfoundation.org/innovation.
The International Innovation Grants are designed to spur innovative, “home-grown” approaches to cancer control in low- and middle-income countries. Each grant provides up to $20,000 that is awarded to a nonprofit organization or governmental agency in a low-income or middle-income country, and requires that the Principal Investigator is an ASCO member, is affiliated with the Grantee Organization, and is a LMC resident. Many more details and application instructions are provided in the Request for Proposal (RFP) document posted to the webpage linked above.
The application will follow a two-stage process, starting with a Letter of Intent that can be submitted between July 1 and August 1. Potential applicants can get started now by reviewing the RFP and beginning to develop the application components.
Our hope is that this funding mechanism will help fresh ideas become reality and, through ASCO’s communication and education channels, be disseminated to other LMC environments.

IV ALATRO Congress

The Asociación Latinoamericana de Terapia Radiante Oncológica (ALATRO) informs that next 2013 they will carry out the IV ALATRO Congress within the beautiful city of Cartagena de Indias, during the days 28 to 31 of July, 2013.

La Patología Mamaria y en especial el cáncer de mama, supone una problemática que en términos generales, necesita de una significativa atención médica multidisciplinar con múltiples variables, tanto en recursos humanos como materiales.
Diariamente miles de profesionales sanitarios en nuestro país, ya sean básicos o asistenciales, y en diferentes niveles, dedican su trabajo a que la salud mamaria sea preservada de forma global.

Partiendo de los logros de los ICCC 1, 2, 3 y 4 el 5º Congreso Internacional de Control del Cáncer continuará despertando conciencia sobre el control del cáncer/ENT, promoviendo transferencia de conocimiento, apoyando la construcción de capacidades, mejorando la participación y promoviendo la colaboración entre organizaciones, instituciones, la política, la práctica y la sociedad civil para aumentar el control global del cáncer and enfermedades no transmisibles. Los temas del Congreso incluyen enfoques intersectoriales al control de factores de riesgo para cáncer y ENTs, integración y coordinación del sistema de salud, alineamiento de la salud poblacional y práctica médica y ciencia para servir, la práctica y la política (transferencia de conocimientos).
El propósito del Congreso es discutir ‘qué sería necesario para convertir nuestro actual conocimiento del control del cáncer en instrucciones y acciones que mejorarán los resultados del cáncer y ENT de la población?’ El actual estado de conocimiento será mencionado en los materiales de pre-lectura del Congreso y a través de presentaciones plenarias. Sin embargo, el Congreso no trata sobre discutir el presente contenido de conocimiento, sino sobre aplicar ‘lo que sabemos sobre lo que hacemos’.

5th International Cancer Control Congress (ICCC5)
November 3-6, 2013 – Westin Lima Hotel & Convention Center - Lima, Peru
The Congress will start with an Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception on Sunday, November 3, 2013, followed by two and a half Congress days with Plenary Sessions and concurrent Workshops.
The official language of the Congress is English. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be provided for all Plenary Sessions.
Building on the achievements of the ICCC 1, 2, 3 and 4 the 5th International Cancer Control Congress will continue to raise cancer/NCD control awareness, promote knowledge transfer, support capacity building, improve participation and promote collaboration between organizations, institutions, policy, practice and civil society to enhance global control of cancer and non-communicable diseases. The themes of the Congress include cross-sectoral approaches to the control of risk factors for cancer and NCD’s, health system integration and coordination, alignment of population-health and medical practice and science to service, practice and policy (knowledge transfer).
The purpose of the Congress is to discuss ‘what would be necessary to convert our current knowledge of cancer control into directions and actions that will enhance population cancer and NCD outcomes?’ The current state of knowledge will be referenced in Congress pre-reading materials and through plenary presentation(s). However, the Congress is not about discussing current knowledge content, but rather about applying ‘what we know to what we do’.

La versión final de la Declaración WOF y una copia de la invitación Stop Cancer Now! ha aparecido como un aviso en International Herald Tribune, Le Monde, El País, La Repubblica y Neue Zürcher Zeitung en el Día Mundial del Cáncer – el 4 de Febrero. También hoy la invitación Stop Cancer Now! es publicado en The Lancet junto a un comentario escrito por el Prof. Franco Cavalli. Stop Cancer Now! appeal
The final version of the WOF Statement and a copy of the Stop Cancer Now! appeal has appeared as an advertisement in the International Herald Tribune, Le Monde, El País, La Repubblica and Neue Zürcher Zeitung on World Cancer Day - the 4th of February. Also today the Stop Cancer Now! appeal is published in The Lancet alongside a commentary written by Prof. Franco Cavalli. Also, an article on WOF will also be published Cancer World magazine (www.cancerworld.org).
The WOF Statement has been translated into French, German, Italian and Spanish and all language versions will be posted on the WOF area of the ESO website on the 4th February 2013.
A teaser video on the WOF and the Appeal has been prepared and can be viewed at www.worldoncologyforum.org. We are also preparing a special film on the Stop Cancer Now! Appeal which will be posted on the website on the 4th of February.

La Escuela Europea de Oncología en cooperación con Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology yCritical Reviews in Oncology Hematology está realizandouna serie de programas de aprendizaje a distancia con Internet,llamadsa 'e-sessions': e-grandrounds e e-oncoreviews.
e-grandrounds: son sesiones semanales en tópicos calientes organizados sin sponsors comerciales y están acreditados por CME y ESMO-MORA.
e-oncoreviews: son sesiones mensuales diseñadas para ofrecer un balance y análisis exhaustivo sobre un tópico específico, sea un tipo de tumor, un tipo de terapia, diagnóstico o enfoque terapéutico. Algunos e-oncoreviews son organizados en colaboración con los sponsors de la Escuela, mientras que las sesiones organizadas por ESO se realizan en cooperación con Nature Reviews in Clinical Oncology y Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology y acreditados por CME y ESMO-MORA.

The European School of Oncology in co-operation with Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology and Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology is holding a series of distance learning programmes on the Internet, called 'e-sessions': e-grandrounds and e-oncoreviews.
e-grandrounds: are weekly sessions on hot-topics organised without commercial sponsorship and are CME and ESMO-MORA accredited.
e-oncoreviews: are monthly sessions designed to offer a balance and comprehensive overview on a specific topic, be it a tumour type, a type of therapy, diagnostic or therapeutic approach. Some e-oncoreviews are organised in collaboration with the School's sponsors, whilst ESO-organised sessions are held in co-operation with Nature Reviews in Clinical Oncology and Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology and CME and ESMO-MORA accredited.
Participants are invited to attend the sessions live:
- e-grandrounds: every Thursday at the same time (18:15-19:00 CET)
- e-oncoreviews: the first Tuesday of the month at the same time (18:15-19:00 CET)
- or the Recorded Session that is available 24 hours after the session live.
In both modes, attendants participate in remote, without webcam and without appearing in the system.
Questions can be sent in advance to the Discussant who will discuss them with the Expert and consider to cover them during the live presentation. During the live session, participants have the opportunity to submit text questions and comments that are received by the Discussant who puts them to the Expert. Questions submitted during the live session are answered to during the session directly!

Muchos países étnicamente diversas en Asia, Latinoamérica, Medio Oriente y Norte de Africa carecen de servicios adecuados para el cáncer para screening y tratamiento y así experimentar altas tasas de mortalidad comparado a otros países con más avanzados diagnóstico y tratamiento del cáncer. Adicionalmente, los enfoques de diagnóstico y tratamiento varían mucho debido a diferencias en normas culturales, sistemas de salud, y condiciones socio-económicas. En este medio ambiente, un solo enfoque al control y prevención del cáncer en todos los países será ineficaz. Por lo tanto, la identificación del impacto de la etnicidad en el riesgo del cáncer y sus etiologías es esencial.
En ERI el objetivo está dirigido a financiar investigación en áreas tales como patogénesis molecular, genética, epigenética como también como determinaciones de factor de riesgo para reducir la incidencia y mortalidad del cáncer en estas poblaciones étnicas. Additionally, approaches to diagnosis and treatment vary greatly due to differences in cultural norms, health care systems, and socio-economic conditions. In this environment, a single approach to cancer control and prevention in all countries will be ineffective. Therefore, identification of the impact of ethnicity on cancer risk and cancer etiologies is essential.
At ERI aim is directed to fund research in areas such as molecular pathogenesis, genetics, epigenetics as well as risk factor determinations to reduce cancer incidence and mortality in these ethnic populations. ERI supports mentorships to promote excellence in scientific investigators who will advance knowledge and understanding of the ethnic determinants of cancer. ERI also further the understanding and knowledge of the medical establishment and policy makers in these communities about the impact of ethnicity on cancer.
